Socialists

Working-class organisation, democratic politics, and the conviction that ordinary people can — and must — reshape the world they live in.

// Statement of Purpose

We are socialists because we believe the economy should serve the people who work in it — not the reverse. We organise because individual effort alone cannot break the structures that keep wealth and power concentrated in too few hands. And we are here, in Queensland, because our struggles are rooted in this place.

A socialist politics rooted in Queensland

Brisbane Socialists brings together people who share a commitment to transforming Australian society along democratic and egalitarian lines. We draw on the long tradition of the labour movement, the civil rights struggle, and the feminist and environmental campaigns that have won lasting change.

Queensland has its own history of working-class struggle — from the 1891 shearers' strikes to the battles against the Bjelke-Petersen government — and we see ourselves as part of that continuing story. The problems people face here — unaffordable housing, insecure work, an inadequate public health system — are not accidents. They are the predictable outcomes of a system organised around private profit rather than human need.

Socialism means replacing that logic with one organised around democratic participation, shared ownership, and genuine human equality. It means taking seriously the idea that the people who do the work should have a say in how it is organised. It means building the kind of collective institutions — unions, community organisations, political parties — through which ordinary people exercise real power.
